It brings me great joy to see a deeper unity emerging within the human community. Yet our dreams of a world in harmony will inevitably remain unrealized so long as we factor in only one of this planet's 1.5 million species. For life expresses itself as Homo sapiens and so much more. Crawlers and jumpers and flyers and creatures we don't even know exist until tsunamis wash them ashore.

Moreover, our minds, our beautiful minds, with their categorizing and labeling tendencies, can scarcely fathom the once-in-a-universe nature of every single being—each just as deserving of honor and tenderness as those we endear.
Our opportunity as humanitarians is to widen our circle of compassion to encompass all of creation. As environmentalists, we can consider not only the ecosystem and future of our race, but the quality of life here and now for all earthlings. As animal lovers, we can remember that humans are animals too, and when our individual suffering lessens, so will the collective.

The irony is subtle but sweet: in embracing our differences we come to know our oneness. Are we not, in essence, a different One?
